What Is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is the treatment of injury, disease, and disorders through physical methods — such as exercise, massage, manipulation and other treatments — over medication and surgery.

Many people may believe that physiotherapists mainly work with back and sports-related injuries, but that is not always the case. Physiotherapists are highly trained health professionals who provide treatment for people suffering from physical problems arising from injury, disease, illness, and ageing.

A physiotherapist’s purpose is to improve a person’s quality of life by using a variety of treatments to alleviate pain and restore function or, in the case of permanent injury or disease, to lessen the effects of any dysfunction.

What Is Speech Therapy?

Speech therapy is treatment for problems with speaking, language, and swallowing. It is given by a speech therapist, also called a speech-language pathologist. Speech therapy helps with using the voice properly and using the muscles to make the right sounds. It helps people understand language and express themselves.

What Is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy is the only profession that helps people across the lifespan to do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of daily activities (occupations). Occupational therapy practitioners enable people of all ages to live life to its fullest by helping them promote health, and prevent—or live better with—injury, illness, or disability.

Common occupational therapy interventions include helping children with disabilities to participate fully in school and social situations, helping people recovering from injury to regain skills, and providing supports for older adults experiencing physical and cognitive changes. Occupational therapy services typically include:

      • an individualized evaluation, during which the client/family and occupational therapist determine the person’s goals,
      • customized intervention to improve the person’s ability to perform daily activities and reach the goals, and
      • an outcomes evaluation to ensure that the goals are being met and/or make changes to the intervention plan.

Occupational therapy practitioners have a holistic perspective, in which the focus is on adapting the environment and/or task to fit the person, and the person is an integral part of the therapy team. It is an evidence-based practice deeply rooted in science.

What Is Sports Massage?

Sports massage is a form of massage involving the manipulation of soft tissue to benefit a person engaged in regular physical activity. Soft tissue is connective tissue that has not hardened into bone and cartilage; it includes skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia (a form of connective tissue that lines and unsheathes the other soft tissue). Sports massage is designed to assist in correcting problems and imbalances in soft tissue that are caused from repetitive and strenuous physical activity and trauma. The application of sports massage, prior to and after exercise, may enhance performance, aid recovery and prevent injury.

Sports massage includes deep tissue, cross frictions and the trigger point technique which helps remove waste products from the muscles, removes adhesions and tension from tight muscles, and allows fresh blood to flow in, therefore improving performance and reducing pain.

Also known as Deep Tissue Massage the Therapists work on specific muscles that are overworked and tight from either too much training, stress or injury. For this treatment massage oil is used.

Our bodies, like our teeth, need regular maintenance to combat the effects of daily stress. For some reason in the West massage is still treated as a luxury, whereas in the East it is seen as a regular form of health maintenance.

Donating to the causes you care about not only benefits the charities themselves, it can be deeply rewarding for you too. Millions of people give to charity on a regular basis to support causes they believe in, as well as for the positive effect it has on their own lives.

We support the Trojans Neurological Trust (TNT).
